Are You Ready to Sleep Train Your Baby? A Pediatric Sleep Consultant's Guide.

As certified pediatric sleep consultants, we have encountered countless parents who are eager to improve their baby's sleep patterns but are unsure if they're truly ready to embark on the journey of sleep training. It's a decision that warrants careful consideration and understanding, as sleep training is a significant step in a baby's development and can have very positive and lasting effects on their sleep habits.

In this blog post, I'll guide you through the key factors to consider when determining if you're ready to take the plunge into sleep training.

Understanding Sleep Training:

First things first, let's clarify what we mean by "sleep training." Sleep training is the process of teaching your baby to fall asleep and stay asleep independently. It involves establishing healthy sleep habits and routines that promote restful and uninterrupted sleep for both baby and parents (win-win!).

Despite what you may have read from other sources, sleep training does not mean putting your little one in their crib in their nursery and closing the door behind you and not coming back until the morning; it also doesn’t always mean full night weaning.

We create plans that include many touch points throughout the process but know that you are supporting your child 100% of the time but also giving them the opportunity to work on and practice their new skills.

Signs You Might Be Ready:

  1. Consistency is Key: Are you prepared to commit to a consistent sleep schedule and bedtime routine for your baby? Consistency and being able to stick to a plan is crucial for successful sleep training.

  2. Emotional Readiness: Are you emotionally prepared for the challenges that may arise during the sleep training process? It's normal to feel nervous, anxious or guilty, but having a support system in place can make a world of difference. That is what we are here for!

  3. Support System: Speaking of support, do you have a support system in place to help you through the sleep training journey? Whether it's a partner, family member, or professional sleep consultant, having someone to lean on can ease the process. As moms who have been through it, we recognize how challenging it can be to change habits and routines. We understand that the first few years of motherhood are stressful and that is why we created our signature and first of its kind More Than Sleep program.

  4. Feeling Frustrated and Exhausted: No judgement here! We get it. When the rocking to sleep, feeding to sleep, bouncing to sleep, swaying to sleep, walking your little one in a stroller at all hours during the night and day isn’t working anymore, it’s time for a change.

Considerations Before Starting:

  1. Health and Development: Ensure that your baby is in good health and developmentally ready for sleep training. Consult with your pediatrician if you have any concerns.

  2. Age and Readiness: While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, most experts recommend starting sleep training as early as 4 months of age when babies are developmentally ready to learn self-soothing techniques.

  3. Personal Values: Reflect on your personal parenting values and philosophies regarding sleep. There are various sleep training methods available, so choose one that aligns with your beliefs and comfort level. You want to make sure that if you decide to work with a consultant, you connect with them and trust them. Most sleep consultants offer complimentary discovery calls. This is your opportunity to interview them and see if they are a good fit. Another way to get a feel for a sleep consultant is to read their reviews. Reviews can be very telling and provide 3rd party credibility.

Deciding whether you're ready to sleep train your baby is a personal and often complex decision. It's essential to weigh the factors discussed above and consider your unique circumstances before diving into sleep training. Remember, there's no shame in seeking guidance or support along the way.
