Night One Prep

NIGHT 1 PREP

Baby and Little Kid Edition

The countdown is on! You’ve made the decision to get some more sleep for you and your family and we couldn’t be more excited to support you through the process.

We want to set you up for success and part of this means nailing the environment. Here are few things you can do:

  • Ensure you have a sound machine. We love the Dreamegg.

  • Darken the room to help minimize early rising and nap issues. Try a GRO Anywhere Blind and pair it with some duct tape. It isn’t classy but it is effective! You want pitch black with no light seeping through the window.

  • If your child is currently sleeping in a bassinet or SNOO, you will need a crib or, a sleep safe travel crib.

Let’s also make sure your baby is nice and cozy.

  • If your baby is 4 to 6 months old, we recommend the Zipadee Zip. If you are in the GTA, we sell them for $60 plus tax.

    • If your baby is 7 months or older, we recommend a sleep sack.

    • If your baby is 7 to 8 months old and is used to co-sleeping or being held to sleep, we recommend the Zipadee Zip to start, otherwise, go straight to using a sleep sack.

      • 2.5 TOG is great for fall/winter sleep.

      • 1 TOG is perfect for warmer spring and summer weather.

  • If your baby is already in a size 2 or larger diaper, consider Huggies Overnites in a size up from their daytime size diaper. If your baby is in a size 1 diaper, we recommend the same diaper for daytime but in 1 size up.

  • For babies over 10 months old, a lovey (or two) would be great. It’s such a comfort for them at bedtime to know that they have a buddy crib side. We love angel dear (Check out Indigo and Westcoast Kids) because they sell them in pairs or groups of three so you have multiples. TRUST US. You want a few.

    • If baby isn’t using one already, sleep with the lovey in your bed for a day or two then put them in the crib or give them to them during their routine on night one.

The Day We Start

On the day we are starting sleep training, try your best to have your child nap as per usual. Please do not try to implement any changes in the plan, just get them rested in any way you can.

  • Offer your same feeds or even a few extra today!

  • Before bed, try to ensure your child has the below wake window leading up to sleep. This is the time from when they wake from last nap and when we are targeting them to be in their crib:

    • 4 M → 2 H

    • 5 M → 2 H 15

    • 6 – 7 M → 2 H 30 - 2 H 45

    • 8 – 11 M → 3 H - 3 H 75

    • 12 – 18 M → 4 H - 5 H 30

  • Please do not start the plan until the evening we begin so we can support you through all the changes.

  • If they don’t feed well today or naps are off, please don’t stress or worry. We got this and all will be ok!

  • Buy chocolate, wine, whatever it takes. You’ll be ok, we’ll make sure of it!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If your child becomes ill the day we are starting (other than teething), please let us know and we will shift your night one. When a child is ill, we focus on them getting better and the sleep work will come when they are back to full health.
